Anthocyanin property of Acai Berries

Anthocyanins are pigments synthesized by plants. This give plants and fruits their beautiful color. They serve as sunscreen that protects plants from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. They are also responsible for the color brightness of fruits that attract insects, thus dispersing the seeds in the process.

Fruits are exposed to stress from the tremendous heat of the sun. The sun ultra-violet rays trigger the release of free radicals. With great amount of free radicals, fruits have high antioxidant properties to suppress free radicals. That is why fruits with bright pigmentation, like grapes and acai berries, have high ORAC values because they are high in anthocyanins containing antioxidants that can be transmitted once eaten.

The good thing about acai berry is that it has higher concentration of anthocyanins than grapes, and 30 times more anthocyanins than red wine.
